The Town Treasurer's office performs the following activities for the Town of La Pointe:

REAL ESTATE PROPERTY TAX COLLECTION

The treasurer's office mails all Real Estate statements for parcels in Ashland county beginning with the 014 prefix. The statements are mailed by the third Monday of December each year in accordance with Wisconsin State Statute. Collections of the first half payments are due to the Town Treasurer's office by January 31st of each year. Please keep in mind the taxes collected are for the previous calendar year.

The second half of the tax bill is due to the Ashland County Treasurer by July 31st of each year.

PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX COLLECTION

Personal property tax statements are mailed at the same time as the real estate statements. All payments for personal property are to be made to Town Treasurer's office. Also, please address any questions regarding personal property to Carol.

UNDERSTANDING PROPERTY TAX

Administration of property tax bills and collection is in accordance with Wisconsin State Statutes, Chapter 74. Though the assessed value of your property affects your share of taxes, the actual amount you pay is determined by the budget needs of the Bayfield School District, Town of La Pointe, Ashland County, Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College and the State of Wisconsin. All of these taxing districts decide the level of services they will provide in the upcoming year and how much money they will require to provide those services. This amount is divided by the assessed value of all of Madeline Island, less the school tax credit, to arrive at the net tax rate. The tax rate is the rate required to raise sufficient money from the property tax to meet the levy. The levy is determined by the total of all the expected sources of revenue, i.e. state aids, shared revenue, licenses and fees. This amount is subtracted from the estimated expenses. The difference must be raised from real estate property tax.

TOWN FUNDS

The office is responsible for the collection, receipting and depositing of all funds due to town in accordance with Wisconsin State Statutes and Town Ordinances.

DOG LICENSES

The Town Treasurer is able to license dogs until January 31 of the current year, after which time licensing is done by the Ashland County Clerk. Please keep your dog current on their rabies vaccination and license them each year.

ROOM ACCOMODATION TAX

The office of the Town Treasurer is responsible for administering and collecting the Town's Room Accommodation Tax. Individuals who rent property on Madeline Island are subject to a room accommodation tax as defined in The Code of the Town La Pointe, Chapter 40, Article IV. The tax is 6.5% of gross rental receipts and is due to the Treasurer quarterly. Rentals of 4 weeks or more are exempt from the room tax. All rental houses must have a rental permit issued by the Town Zoning Administrator.

This includes administering and enforcing Zoning regulations in the Town of La Pointe. With authority through the Intermunicipal Agreement with Ashland County, the Planning and Zoning Administrator also administers and enforces applicable Ashland County Ordinances, including shoreland, floodplain, subdivision and Private Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems on Madeline Island.
